• Training

  Training takes place typically four times per week, mainly focusing on individual performance and technique. Members can attend as many or as few sessions as they like, and don’t have to attend the same sessions each week. Regular coaching sessions are available for novice and experienced members, and delivered by Paralympian Murray Elliot and experienced members of the club. Coaching sessions range from working on mental routines to learning which muscles are required to adequately perform the shot, and how to strengthen these muscles.

  Archery is a very accessible sport, and within our club we provide coaching in seated archery.

  As part of our beginners course and subsequent training, members are also shown how to put together and maintain equipment. The club provides all the equipment that is needed to participate in archery, and also gives guidance to members interested in buying their own kit.

  From September to March, the club shoots predominantly indoors, and then transitions to outdoor training for the rest of the academic year.

  To attend archery training sessions members must have attended a beginners course with either Saints Archery at the beginning of the academic year or previously at another club.

• Competition

  The club competes regularly throughout the season, entering teams in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS) events, as well as attending and hosting friendly competitions with other clubs.

  Competitions are open to both novice and experienced archers, and new members are able to participate once they have completed the beginners course.

  Archery is primarily an individual sport constructed around individual leagues and competitions, but the scores of each participant can be added together to form an overall team score.

  St Andrews also hosts the annual Silver Arrow competition, the oldest archery tournament in Scotland, which is attended by archers from all over the country.

  The University hosts a Sports Fayre at the beginning of each academic year during Orientation Week, giving prospective players the opportunity to talk to club members and sign up to ‘Give It A Go’ sessions.
